‘Nickel alloy’ is a general term that refers to a grade of metal that has a particularly high composition of nickel within it. Inconel is simply a particular variety of nickel alloy. Nickel Alloy Pipes are manufactured using such compositions to suit specific industrial requirements.

When you change the chemical composition of the alloy in question, this subsequently changes its benefits. Different benefits mean that different nickel alloys have different commercial uses, and the same applies to Nickel Alloy Piping systems used across industries.

Of all the nickel alloys available, Special Piping Materials specifically specialises in two varieties: Inconel Alloy 625, which is made up of a minimum of 58% nickel, and Inconel Alloy 825, which contains between 38–46% nickel. Alloy 400 (nickel-copper) is a solid-solution alloy providing good mechanical strength and toughness over a wide temperature range combined with excellent corrosion resistance. 

The alloy exhibits outstanding properties at sub-zero (including cryogenic) temperatures. Strength and hardness increase with only slight impairment of ductility or toughness. Alloy 400 does not undergo a ductile to brittle transition even when cooled to the temperature of liquid hydrogen. The density of alloy 400 is 8.80 g/cc.

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 are solid solution strengthened, commercially pure wrought materials with good mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures and excellent resistance to many corrosives, in particular hydroxides. Nickel 201 was a modification of 200 to control carbon (.02 max) which keeps it from being embrittled by intergranular precipitates at temperatures of 600 F to 1400 F in many processes. Typically, the elemental restrictions of both, nickel 200 and nickel 201, are combined into one, dual-certified chemistry resulting in a single alloy with the desired characteristics of both alloys, Nickel 200/201.

Nickel 200 is normally limited to service at temperatures below 600F. At higher temperatures Nickel 200 products can suffer from graphitization which can result in severely compromised properties. When operating temperatures are expected to exceed 600 F, carbon content becomes critical. The lower carbon content of Nickel 201 makes the material resistant to graphitization and therefore less subject to embrittlement. Nickel 200 & 201 are approved for construction of pressure vessels and components under ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Division 1. Nickel 200 is approved for service up to 600 F while Nickel 201 is approved for service up to 1230 F. Melting point is 2615-2635 F.
