‘Nickel alloy’ is a general term that refers to a grade of metal that has a particularly high composition of nickel within it. Inconel is simply a particular variety of nickel alloy.

When you change the chemical composition of the alloy in question, this subsequently changes its benefits. Different benefits mean that different nickel alloys have different commercial uses.

Some of these uses include:

• – Aircraft gas turbines
• – Steam turbine power plants
• – Medical applications
• – Nuclear power systems
• – Chemical and petrochemical industries

 

Many of these applications require the material to be resistant to both corrosion and heat, hence why nickel and nickel alloys are such a good fit.

Of all the nickel alloys out there, Special Piping Materials specifically specialises in two varieties. Inconel Alloy 625, which is made up of a minimum of 58% nickel, and Inconel Alloy 825, which is made up of between 38-46% nickel. Both of these products are known to perform very well in corrosive environments.

Special Piping Materials is able to source any type of product – such as round bar, flanges or even seamless pipe in Inconel Alloy 625 and Inconel Alloy 825.

INCONEL® nickel-chromium alloy 625 (UNS N06625/W.Nr. 2.4856) is used for its high strength, excellent fabricability (including joining), and outstanding corrosion resistance. Service temperatures range from cryogenic to 1800°F (982°C). Composition is shown in Table 1. Strength of INCONEL alloy 625 is derived from the stiffening effect of molybdenum and niobium on its nickel-chromium matrix; thus precipitationhardening treatments are not required. This combination of elements also is responsible for superior resistance to a wide range of corrosive environments of unusual severity as well as to high-temperature effects such as oxidation and carburization. The properties of INCONEL alloy 625 that make it an excellent choice for sea-water applications are freedom from local attack (pitting and crevice corrosion), high corrosion-fatigue strength, high tensile strength, and resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking. It is used as wire rope for mooring cables, propeller blades for motor patrol gunboats, submarine auxiliary propulsion motors, submarine quickdisconnect fittings, exhaust ducts for Navy utility boats, sheathing for undersea communication cables, submarine transducer controls, and steam-line bellows. Potential applications are springs, seals, bellows for submerged controls, electrical cable connectors, fasteners, flexure devices, and oceanographic instrument components.

Alloy 400 (nickel-copper) is a solid-solution alloy providing good mechanical strength and toughness over a wide temperature range combined with excellent corrosion resistance. 

The alloy exhibits outstanding properties at sub-zero (including cryogenic) temperatures. Strength and hardness increase with only slight impairment of ductility or toughness. Alloy 400 does not undergo a ductile to brittle transition even when cooled to the temperature of liquid hydrogen. The density of alloy 400 is 8.80 g/cc. 

Corrosion Resistance:Alloy 400 provides excellent resistance to corrosion in a range of media including seawater, hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric acid and alkalis and is widely employed in marine engineering and chemical processing. 

It is more resistant than nickel to corrosion under reducing conditions and more resistant than copper under oxidising conditions. This nickel-copper alloy is therefore in general more resistant to corrosion than either of its two principal constituents. Resistance to stress corrosion cracking in chloride containing media is extremely good.

Copper alloys are metal alloys that have copper as their principal component. They have high resistance against corrosion. The best known traditional types are bronze, where tin is a significant addition, and brass, using zinc instead.

Nickel 200/201 UNS Number N02200/N02201

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 are solid solution strengthened, commercially pure wrought materials with good mechanical properties over a wide range of temperatures and excellent resistance to many corrosives, in particular hydroxides. Nickel 201 was a modification of 200 to control carbon (.02 max) which keeps it from being embrittled by intergranular precipitates at temperatures of 600 F to 1400 F in many processes. Typically, the elemental restrictions of both, nickel 200 and nickel 201, are combined into one, dual-certified chemistry resulting in a single alloy with the desired characteristics of both alloys, Nickel 200/201.

Both Nickel 200 and 201 offer corrosion resistance in reducing and neutral media as well as in oxidizing atmospheres provided that the oxidizing media allows the formation of a passive oxide film. This oxide film accounts for the materials excellent resistance in caustic environments. Corrosion rates in both marine and rural atmospheres are very low. The resistance of Nickel 200/201 to corrosion by distilled and natural waters is excellent. Plus it also gives excellent service in flowing sea water even at high velocity, but in stagnant or very low-velocity sea water severe local attack may occur under fouling organisms or other deposits. In hot water systems where the steam contains carbon dioxide and air in certain proportions, corrosion rates will be initially high but will decrease with time if conditions favor the formation of a protective film.

Nickel 200 is normally limited to service at temperatures below 600F. At higher temperatures Nickel 200 products can suffer from graphitization which can result in severely compromised properties. When operating temperatures are expected to exceed 600 F, carbon content becomes critical. The lower carbon content of Nickel 201 makes the material resistant to graphitization and therefore less subject to embrittlement. Nickel 200 & 201 are approved for construction of pressure vessels and components under ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII, Division 1. Nickel 200 is approved for service up to 600 F while Nickel 201 is approved for service up to 1230 F. Melting point is 2615-2635 F.
